I expected much from The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten light novel, hence I am kinda disappointed after I finished reading the first volume.

Keep in mind that this is the review of the First volume of The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten.

Before giving you my reason, Let’s me give you some information about the novel.

Synopsis

Mahiru is a beautiful girl whose classmates all call her an “angel.” Not only is she a star athlete with perfect grades—but she’s also drop-dead gorgeous. Amane‚ an average guy and self-admitted slob‚ has never thought much of the divine beauty‚ despite attending the same school. Everything changes, however, ‚ when he happens to see Mahiru sitting alone in a park during a rainstorm. Thus begins the strange relationship between this incredibly unlikely pair!

My Thoughts

Like I said earlier I thought it was okay. I felt the story was average.

On one side we have Mahiru, the beautiful girl whom everyone calls Angel, and on another side, we have Amane, your everyday average guy who is a slob. They are neighbors who live next to each other. They met by chance on a rainy day and Amane “lend” his umbrella to her. Due to his carelessness, he gets sick, and Mahiru nurses him. Then the next things lead to another and now Mahiru is in Amane’s home cooking him dinner.

The author Saekisan is clearly trying to portray the story as realistic as possible. We have Amane, an average boy, and Mahiru, a beautiful and hardworking girl- their two contrasting characters have slow and steady development as they interact with each other. You can see that from the dialogues which are wholesome and adorable. The dialogues between Mahiru and Amane seem genuine from each other’s point as they interact with each other daily, share their thoughts, and care for each other.

Throughout the story, one of the famous classical tropes appears. Mahiru helps him to do something, Amane is like She is doing this for me because of this…. not because she likes me. That was a bit annoying for me. But I guess a person in real life in that situation will think like that.

We have seen a similar trope in My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Light Novel, where at first Hachiman Hikigaya rejects two girl’s feelings thinking they are saying this to me because of this…. not because she genuinely likes me.

But I am also confused about Mahiru, does she like him or not!?

At first, I thought Mahiru liked Amane because she was helping him all the time. Then while reading toward the end, I felt like that wasn’t the case.

I guess the correct answer will be both like each other but have yet to realize it.

Another classical trope. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The complaint I have with this story is that I found nothing new in this light novel.

Yes, the story is heartwarming, and the interaction is funny and pleasing but what’s new in this story?

We have seen too many “I don’t deserve this girl because she is too beautiful.” trope in other novels, anime, or manga. The same happens in Oremonogatari anime and in Rent-a-Girlfriend.

Now she is with him chatting and laughing. Amane thinks No how can I like her?

I guess the pace of the story is too slow, there’s not much in the first volume of this series.

There’s still one mystery that remains in the story. It’s about Miharu’s past: Why was she alone in the part in that rain? And the little sadness that she shows on her face.

If you are looking for a nice, slow-burn, light, heartwarming, and fluffy read then I would highly recommend reading this but this story is not for someone who wants some depth in the plot.
